2018 La Petite Vanguard Riesling

We’ve always thought of the La Petite Vanguard as being our example of a Bistro style wine – the experimental baby brother to Vanguardist. Youthful & vibrant, with great drinkability, countered by layers of complexity from thoughtful use of solids, skin contact, oak, and other vessels.
The summer of 2018 was brutal, due to several above 40-degree days, and hit our dry grown Churinga Vineyard especially hard. We saw an excellent quality of Riesling over two different hand picks, but a small yield of around 28HL/Ha, 25% below the long-term average.
The bunches and berries were small, and some exposure to extra light had left potential phenolic quantity higher than previous years. For this reason, extended skin contact was not used for either the La Petite, or Vanguardist Rieslings in V2018. Both separate picks (one faces due east, and one due west) were destemmed, crushed, and pressed to separate tanks.
Rough racked after about 12 hours, a combination of higher solids, and oak treatment has been used to gain further complexity. The wine is made up of 70% high solids tank ferment, 20% ex new Slavonian oak foudre, and 10% aged hogsheads.
