PAST VINTAGES

2020 GRENACHE

The Grenache that produces this wine comes from an outstanding vineyard in Blewitt Springs. A hidden gem of sorts, the high ‘Silver Sands’ vineyard was planted by Robert Rende and his father Michael some 50+ years ago. The summer of 2020 was the third hot and dry vintage in succession. Small patches of rain during critical moments helped the vines remain vibrant, yet crops were just a little above 50% of long-term average (18HL/Ha). The final wine sees around 50% whole bunch, slightly less than the past couple of releases.

A three-year-old 2200 litre Slavonian oak foudre, plus two French oak puncheons housed the wine for about 14 months post press, before the wine was bottled without fining or filtration.

2020 MOURVÈDRE

The Mourvèdre is sourced from Yangarra, both organic and Bio-dynamic certified, in Blewitt Springs. The summer of 2020 was the third hot and dry vintage in succession. Small patches of rain during critical moments helped the vines remain vibrant, and the fruit in wonderful condition. The final wine sees around 40% whole bunch.

We’ve been making wine from this fruit for four years now. However, 2020 saw the first release of a red blend (La Petite Vanguard BLEWITT), and the inaugural Vanguardist Mourvèdre. Inspired by many great Mourvèdre wines from throughout the SW of France, it felt like a natural progression to have this wine sit beside the Vanguardist Grenache from just down the road.

French oak puncheons housed the wine for about 14 months post press, before the wine was bottled without fining or filtration.

2020 HAWKES BAY SYRAH

The 2020 Syrah is sourced from Ash Ridge in the Bridge Pa triangle, Hawkes Bay. Organic certified/in conversion, selection Massale and Chave clones. Both spontaneous ferments, one at 30% whole bunch and the other at 60%. Around 5 weeks on skins with very gentle pigeage prior to pressing. The raw wine was shipped to the Vanguardist winery in Seppeltsfield mid-winter 2020 and spent a further 12 months of elevage in a 22HL Slavonian oak foudre.

Why Hawkes Bay Syrah? Michael grew up here and completed no less than 10 New Zealand vintages. He also obtained a BWSc at the local Eastern Institute of Technology. He has friends and family based here and it felt like a great opportunity to reconnect with where it all started.

2019 GRENACHE

The Grenache that produces this wine comes from an outstanding spot in Blewitt Springs. A hidden gem of sorts, the high ‘Silver Sands’ vineyard was planted by Robert Rende and his father some 50+ years ago.

The summer of 2019 was brutal, which stressed even our dry grown goblet vines. We saw an excellent quality of Grenache across several hand picks. A lowly yield of around 16HL/Ha, which is 50% below the long-term average and the smallest crop in history. The final wine sees around 60% whole bunch.

Two year old 2200 litre Slavonian oak foudre housed the wine for about 13 months post press, before the wine was bottled without fining or filtration.

2019 RIESLING

The summer of 2019 was brutal and continued to hit the dry grown Churinga Vineyard especially hard. We saw an excellent quality of Riesling over three separate hand picks. Yields were similar to 2018, around 28HL/Ha which is 25% below the long-term average.

The bunches and berries were small, and some exposure to extra light had left potential phenolic quantity higher than previous years. All picks were foot crushed and held for approx 6 hours before pressing. Handled very oxidatively, and rough racked after a day to one year old Slovanian oak foudre, where fermentation both primary and MLF took place. Elevage continued in foudre and a couple of old barriques, for almost a year prior to being bottled without fining or filtration.

2018 'RENDE' GRENACHE

The Vanguardist range represents the epitome of what we are about. Pushing the realms of standard winemaking to deliver intrigue, excitement and utmost quality, without any loss of sense of place. Ultimate dedication to the craft of viticulture and winemaking, encapsulated in a bottle – through our lens.

The summer of 2018 was brutal, due to several above 40-degree days which stressed even our dry grown goblet vines. However, we saw an excellent quality of Grenache across several different hand picks, albeit a lowly yield of around 20HL/Ha, which is 40% below the long-term average.

Selected from the second of three picks, a very small and special parcel stood out, that encapsulated the essence and vision of Vanguardist in a single 900kg ferment.

The final wine sees around 60% whole bunch. Left on skins for 40 days, before being basket pressed. Elevage took place in a single 600lt demi muid for 12 months. Rende was bottled without fining or filtration
