2017 'La Petite Vanguard', Riesling
Riesling sourced from the Watervale sub-region of the Clare Valley, South Australia.
“From Watervale, with about 35% barrel ferment, so it’s a slightly different expression of Clare Valley Riesling to your usual tank and sparkly clean and clear numbers.
It’s a bit different, but in a good way, with its flavour almost going towards real lemonade with a dash of Japanese ginger. It’s a little softer in style, with a powdery texture, but has a good cut of acidity, perhaps like ruby red grapefruit in taste and feel, and a spicy and juicy finish of fine length. Yum.”

A portion of the fruit was de-stemmed and crushed before pressing and cold settling in tank. This was racked and inoculated with a ‘pied de cuve’ from the same vineyard. A cold (10-12 degrees) ferment took place in tank and made up about 65% of the final blend. The other component was made up from a direct press to barrel ferment. This gives the wine greater layers of texture, whilst maintaining classic flavour and mineral characters that makes Clare Riesling the best in the country.
This was then followed by a couple of rackings by gravity, and final blended before being bottled in August, without fining or filtration.
