2018 Vanguardist Riesling
SOURCED FROM CHURINGA
WATERVALE, CLARE VALLEY, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
The Vanguardist range represents the epitome of what we are about. Pushing the realms of standard winemaking to deliver intrigue, excitement and utmost quality, without any loss of sense of place. Ultimate dedication to the craft of viticulture and winemaking, encapsulated in a bottle -through our lens.
“Aniseed, lime, cinnamon dusted apple, flowers. Full flavour and almost creamy powdery texture, cut back of juicy lime acidity, spicy perfume, crunchy green apple finish of excellent length.
Sure, it’s a bit different to your typical Clare Valley Riesling, but that’s the point.”
94 POINTS, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
The summer of 2018 was brutal, due to several above 40-degree days, and it hit our dry grown Churinga Vineyard especially hard.
We saw an excellent quality of Riesling over two separate hand picks come into the winery, albeit smaller than usual yields of around 28HL/Ha which is 25% below the long-term average.
The bunches and berries were small, and some exposure to extra light had left potential phenolic quantity higher than previous years. For this reason, extended skin contact was not used for either the La Petite, or Vanguardist Rieslings in V2018. Both picks (one faces due east, and one due west) were destemmed, crushed, and pressed to separate tanks. Roughly racked after about 12 hours, a combination of higher solids, and oak treatment has been used to gain further complexity.
This wine is made up of 80% high solids new Slavonian oak foudre ferment, and 20% aged barriques ferment. After around six months the wine was racked ex oak and blended in tank where it spent another five months prior to be bottled without fining or filtration.
